This is a score I wrote for director Hsuan Yu Pan's "Alone/Together", a 40-minute documentary film about life under the global COVID-19 pandemic. As the film has a non-linear narrative, showing different people's lives at home around the world, I thought it was more effective if I composed a set of mood pieces rather than scene specific cues. With that in mind, I created a set of musical cells that I call "triggers", where a certain cell for a certain instrument would trigger another cell on a different instrument. This semi-aleatoric style of writing enables the musicians to keep performing the piece for hours if they wish, while maintaining a certain mood, even though they would never sound the same twice.

Needless to say, "triggers" alone could not possibly help expressing the broad range of emotions fully, a good old melody is still needed sometimes. So, I wrote one that became the theme of the film, entitled "Harapan", which means "Hope" in Malay, my national language. The titles of the other two sets of music meant "Atmosphere" (Atmosfera) and "Loneliness" (Sepi) respectively.

I would like to thank my dear friends, pianist Vicky Chow (Bang on a Can All-Stars) and cellist Hamilton Berry (Publiquartet), who helped bringing this score alive with so much soul and beauty, I couldn't have asked for better people to play this music. Many thanks to Director Pan for her trust in my ability to score this very meaningful and important film.

Last but not least, my eternal gratitude to my long-time partner-in-crime, Rozhan Razman of R.M.P. Productions for yet another adventure together on opposite sides of the planet.
